Our sustainability framework

We want Ahlstrom to be a successful and sustainable business, not just economically, but socially and environmentally.

Everything we do is underpinned by this belief, from the way we interact with our supply chain to the way we manage our workplaces.

We put this into practice by organizing our sustainability efforts in the same way as we organize our business: product development, sourcing, manufacturing, and product management. Our approach to social issues extends over all these disciplines.

Product development

Every product has an impact on the environment. We only make products that are truly needed by people. We use EcoDesign including Life Cycle Assessments and green chemistry to minimize the environmental impacts of our products.

Responsible sourcing

We want our suppliers to adhere and commit to the same principles of responsible conduct as we do ourselves.

Ahlstrom has a Supplier Code of Conduct and in 2013, 85% of our main raw material supplies were procured from suppliers that had signed the Code.

The vast majority of our fiber supply is wood fiber. We only buy from responsible sources and suppliers that are either PEFC™ or FSC™ certified. We have an extensive verification program for sustainability of the forest based fibers. Ahlstrom complies with the EU Timber Regulation by having an externally verified Due Diligence System in place.

Manufacturing

Our manufacturing operations are always striving to be more efficient. It’s all about doing more with less, and saving both money and resources. At the same time we want to minimize our emissions to air, water and soil.

Product management

We are good stewards of the products we make, and pride ourselves on building long-term relationships with our customers. They face many of the same sustainability challenges that we do, and we can help them meet these challenges by providing more sustainable products, including the sustainability credentials in our value propositions.

Safety, human rights and leadership and management practices equally concern every part of the company and extending over all disciplines.
