Celebrating 175 years: where Ahlstrom’s story began
Some companies start life in boardrooms. Ahlstrom began beside a river, in western Finland, where timber once floated downstream through the village of Noormarkku.
It was here that founder Antti Ahlström laid the foundations of a business that would grow far beyond its industrial origins, shaping communities, culture, and innovation for generations to come.
Today, 175 years later, Noormarkku still tells you something essential about Ahlstrom: a belief in building for the long term.
The foundations of a growing business
Antti Ahlström began forming his business in 1851, starting with shipping and goods trading before expanding into sawmills and ironworks across Finland.
A defining moment came in 1870, when he acquired the Noormarkku Works, an ironworks and sawmill complex along the Noormarkku river.
The site became both an industrial center and home of the Ahlström family. But growth in Noormarkku extended beyond business operations alone.
Alongside expanding production, the family invested in local infrastructure, schools, and roads, helping care for the surrounding community as the company grew.

A growth mindset from the beginning
Over the generations, Noormarkku Works became more than an industrial site. What began as a place of production became the centre of Ahlstrom’s operations and the family’s life.
Production facilities were joined by family residences and administrative buildings, including the head office, which was completed in 1907.
As Ahlstrom grew, so did the family’s interest in architecture, design, and the arts. For the Ahlströms, these were never separate pursuits, but part of a broader vision for progress and modern living.

Where tradition meets modernity
That vision became internationally recognized in 1939 with the completion of Villa Mairea, designed by Finnish architects Alvar and Aino Aalto.
Built as the home of Maire Gullichsen, Antti’s granddaughter, and her husband Harry, then CEO the company, Villa Mairea is widely regarded as one of the great works of 20th-century architecture.
Blending modern materials alongside strong ties to its Finnish surroundings, the villa captured the balance between tradition and innovation that continues to shape Ahlstrom today.
Noormarkku today: A living part of Ahlstrom’s heritage
Known today as Ahlström Estate, Noormarkku Works remains in the hands of the Ahlström family, and is recognized as a nationally significant cultural environment in Finland.
The site continues to welcome visitors around the world through exhibitions, guided tours, accommodation, and dining experiences, including trips to Villa Mairea itself.
While deeply connected to its history, Ahlström Estate remains a living, breathing place that continues to evolve.
From local roots to global impact
What began with timber trading and riverside industry has grown into a global company focused on sustainable specialty materials.
Now, Ahlstrom Oyj operates across 13 countries with approximately 7,000 employees and 36 production facilities worldwide.
We develop materials that help purify water, filter air, support diagnostics, and protect people in their everyday environments
Though our organization has certainly transformed over nearly two centuries, one principle has remained consistent: turning raw materials into solutions that serve society.
Looking at Noormarkku, it’s clear that a growth mindset was present from the very beginning. Ahlstrom was built for the long term, investing in ideas, people, and places whose value unfolds over time. That instinct remains as relevant today as it was in 1851.
And 175 years on, the story of Ahlstrom is still being written. In the moment, for the future.
