How innovative and recyclable tape-backing products are transforming the e-commerce, logistics, and packaging industries

Sustainable packaging is one of the megatrends of today’s world, and Ahlstrom’s Tape business is responding with innovative tape backings for packaging.

In 2021, to gain share in the pressure sensitive adhesive (PSA) space, Ahlstrom introduced MasterTape® Pack − a dedicated range of fiber-based tape backing products with high bio-based contents that offer a sustainable alternative to traditional plastic films. This initiative marks the beginning of a series of innovative developments.

“Our ambition is to leverage our leading position in the Masking Tape segment to grow market share in Packaging and Specialties Tape. We also ambition to access new market segments such as Stationery & Office Supplies with our innovative solutions, to become the preferred supplier for sustainable tape backing solutions,” explained Sebastien Ferrari, Product Manager of Packaging Tape.

In 2022, the product line was expanded with the launch of MasterTape® Pack Green, a fully equipped tape backing that is designed for carton boxes up to 15 kg and is addressing end-of-life concerns with the ability to recycle fibers into new paper.

The product family grew again that year, with the addition of MasterTape® Pack Crepe − a lightweight, stretchy tape backing with very good shock absorption and conformability.

“The market is looking for alternatives to plastic, and our products are sustainable by design,” said Sebastien. “Fiber-based tape backings help reduce plastic, which supports our customers and brand owners in achieving their sustainability goals while contributing to a better world.”

Ahlstrom’s reputation for creating high-performing sustainable specialty materials and its purpose ‘to Purify and Protect, with Every Fiber, for a Sustainable World, supports sales development for the new Tape products.

“Sales of MasterTape® Pack products are growing steadily,” said Sebastien. “The products are highly appreciated by our customers because they have a good fit for the purpose, with optimized converting capabilities and meaningful sustainability features.”

With the new Packaging and Packaging Waste Regulation (PPWR) aiming to accelerate the shift from plastic to paper packaging, MasterTape Pack® range is well-positioned to support companies in packaging and e-commerce industries. In addition to Ahlstrom's Arches plant, in France, where MasterTape® Pack Green is produced, the T12 Paper Machine in Thilmany, US, was recently converted to manufacture crepe tape grades and other crepe products. As the e-commerce boom continues, meeting future demand for sustainable packaging solutions will continue to be a team effort.
